Acupuncture

Acupuncture is not commonly thought of when it comes to headaches. However, it is a very common practice in China and is extremely effective in decreasing, minimizing, and removing the common symptoms of a headache. Depending on the location of the headache i.e. Frontal, Parietal, Occipital will determine the effective channels or meridians to be stimulated or reduced according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory.

Meridians

Meridians are invisible lines or paths of energy which can be stimulated through acupuncture and herbal medicine. The process of using acupuncture or herbal medicine to produce certain outcomes for the patient according to the persons underlying disharmony. This can be felt by palpating the radial pulse and observing the tongue. Both of these valuable diagnostic tools give information about the internal organs and where the vital energy needs to be stimulated or reduced.

For example, a patient may have headaches due to Qi deficiency also known as Chi, and is basically translated to “Vital Force”.  Qi, a deficiency that would have symptoms of low energy, craving sweets, bruising easily, and feeling bloated. This can be the underlying root cause of headaches so tonifying Chi would reduce the recurrence of this unwanted health concern and in effect provide more balance and harmony.

Headache Treatment

Another example may be Liver Chi stagnation which may have symptoms of Impatience, Irritability, Reactiveness, and possibly digestive disorders such as constipation, acid reflux, and fullness or distension. Indications of this can be also supported by other signs and symptoms with the possibility of either waking between 1-3 am or not being able to go to sleep until that time. This can be classic Liver Chi stagnation signs with this diagnosis in TCM. Certain acupuncture points move Liver Chi and of course, certain herbal medicine moves Liver Chi as well. Liver Qi stagnation can be a cause of headaches.
