The healing power that flows through the hands has been recognized across cultures and eras — from the temples of ancient Egypt, where physician-priests channeled divine energy through the touch of the hand, to the healing temples of Asclepius in ancient Greece, where the sick slept in sacred halls awaiting a divine touch, to the laying on of hands described throughout the Bible, the healing hymns of the Vedas, and the channeling of Qi in Chinese medicine. In each, this power has been understood as something drawn not from the practitioner, but from a source far greater. The healer does not heal; they open themselves as a channel.

Beneath the doctorates, the board certifications, and the clinical training lies something older and simpler — the reason Dr. Tony became a healer in the first place.
His connection to the healing arts began long before acupuncture. In his twenties and thirties in Australia, he sought out healing churches, houses of worship, and sacred places across many traditions — witnessing and receiving the laying on of hands, not as a passerby, but as a sincere student, humbled by the energy each one held. Those early encounters — including his experiences at the Australian Spiritual Healers Association — planted a question he has spent his whole life trying to answer: how does healing actually move through the hands, and how does a person get out of its way enough to let it through?
He pursued that question with the same discipline he brings to everything else: completing Touch for Health (Levels I–III) and Kinesiology certification, and earning Reiki Levels I, II, and Master. In 2002, he completed all four levels plus Advanced certification in CranioSacral Therapy at the Upledger Institute — a discipline that demands extraordinary sensitivity and refined his hand palpation to a degree few practitioners reach.
It’s a pursuit Dr. Tony still returns to, not as something mastered, but as a practice he continues to humble himself to every day — the quiet foundation beneath every treatment at Acupuncture Zen.
After more than 20 years of clinical practice — and decades developing his sensitivity of touch through every modality above — Dr. Tony has arrived at a place where the acupuncture needle is no longer a separate instrument. It has become an extension of his hands and his healing intention.
Where to place a needle, how deep, at what angle, and with what quality of touch has become second nature, refined through more than 6 million needles placed over two decades of practice, in Chinese hospitals and the treatment rooms of Acupuncture Zen. Patients — including professional athletes accustomed to world-class care — often say they feel something in his technique they haven’t experienced elsewhere: a quality of presence and precision that comes from a lifetime devoted to the art, the science, and the spirit of healing.
Dr. Tony and his wife, Marcelene Dyer, have traveled to some of the world’s most spiritually significant sites — pilgrimages undertaken as sincere seekers rather than tourists, drawn to absorb the energy that has gathered in these places across centuries of prayer and devotion.
Among the most meaningful was time spent in the rainforests of Costa Rica and Colombia, where Dr. Tony received personal instruction from Taita Juanito, the Amazonian shaman featured in the documentary The Medicine. Dr. Tony does not administer plant medicine in his practice — he traveled to learn and to receive. Through direct transmission, he was taught icaros, the sacred songs of the Amazonian shamanic tradition, which in that culture are understood as living expressions of healing intention carried in sound and breath. He carries that experience with humility and reverence — the same quality of presence, translated now through the needle rather than the song. That same intention now shapes the space at Acupuncture Zen — a place built not just for treatment, but for presence.

Dr. Tony approaches this dimension of his work as a complement to care, never a replacement for it, and always at the patient’s invitation. In his own words: “I am simply a humble servant of the healing that wants to come through. My role is to create the space, hold the intention, and get out of the way.”
And for patients who prefer a straightforward clinical experience with no spiritual element at all, that is equally welcome and equally respected. There is no pressure and no prescription — only acupuncture and care offered with skill and presence. As Dr. Tony often says, much of healing is about helping you access what is already within you.
Do I have to engage with the spiritual side of my treatment?
Not at all. This dimension of care is entirely optional and only explored if and when you invite it. Many patients receive exceptional acupuncture care at Acupuncture Zen with no spiritual conversation at all — both experiences are equally welcome here.
However you choose to walk through the door — seeking pain relief, deep rest, or something harder to name — you’ll be met with the same skill, warmth, and respect. This is a space to heal on your own terms.
