Postoperative Pain

Overview of Postoperative Pain

Trauma from surgery causes inflammation and, in some cases, irritation of the nerves in the area. Pain after surgery is considered acute. It is very common and usually well-managed with prescribed medicine. However, some people can suffer from this for an extended time. And for others, medication is not effective at controlling it.

Acupuncture for Postoperative Pain

Acupuncture is an alternative technique to manage all kinds of pain, including post-operative. It has proven effective in various studies throughout the years. In several cases, it is helpful even on day one after surgery and can reduce the need for opioids.

Acupuncture helps your own body regulate pain. The use of electrical stimulation around the areas of pain can improve circulation and help reduce inflammation by increasing the production of pain-relieving chemicals: endorphin, enkephalin, and norepinephrine. These natural substances produced by the body can be more potent than morphine.

What to Expect?

At Acupuncture Zen, we use local needles for areas of pain along with and maybe with electrical stimulation depending on the specifics for the individual patient. Often cupping can be applied and the use of K Laser class IV or Thor Laser class 3b to help reduce scar tissue and improve blood supply. Laser therapy can help soften the scar returning the tissue back to its optimal function post-surgery.

Acupuncture Zen in Delray also offers other modalities, such as Novothor red-light therapy bed. Using both acupuncture and laser therapy combined can produce the best outcome for treating post-operative pain. On our website, you can find more information on how red light and laser can help you under the services tab.
