Clinical experience is the foundation of exceptional patient care — and by that measure, few acupuncture practices anywhere in South Florida can match what Dr. Tony Willcox brings to Acupuncture Zen every single day.
With over 20 years of clinical acupuncture experience, more than 12 million acupuncture needles inserted across a career dedicated entirely to patient healing, and advanced training spanning Australia, the United States, and China at the doctoral level, Dr. Tony is one of the most experienced and comprehensively trained acupuncture and integrative medicine physicians practicing in Florida today.

Dr. Tony began his Florida acupuncture journey in September 2006, opening Acupuncture Now in Deerfield Beach, where he practiced for 6 years and built a loyal patient community through outstanding clinical results. In 2011, he relocated to Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, opening Acupuncture Zen — a natural evolution, as he describes it, of going “from Now to Zen.”
More than 14 years later, Acupuncture Zen has become one of the most trusted and respected integrative medicine practices in Delray Beach and South Florida — a reflection not of marketing, but of outcomes. Patients heal here. They refer their families and friends. They come back.
That is the only measure of success that has ever mattered to Dr. Tony Willcox.

Dr. Tony Willcox received personal tuition and certification directly from Professor Shi Xue Min of Tianjin, China — one of the most influential and celebrated figures in the history of modern acupuncture. Recognized as a National Treasure by the People’s Republic of China and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Shi is renowned worldwide for developing Xing Nao Kai Qiao (XNKQ) — translated as “Activating the Brain and Opening the Orifices” — a groundbreaking neurological acupuncture protocol that has transformed the clinical treatment of stroke and complex neurological conditions globally. His remarkable work was brought to international attention through the award-winning documentary 9000 Needles, which followed an American stroke patient who traveled to China seeking treatment under Professor Shi after exhausting all options in the United States — with extraordinary results.
XNKQ works by raising clear Qi and opening the orifices to restore neurological function and promote deep healing. It is highly effective for a wide range of complex neurological conditions, including stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease, Bell’s Palsy, facial paralysis, tremors, neuralgia, dementia, and coma. Professor Shi has authored multiple landmark books on acupuncture, pioneered clinical protocols used in hospitals across China, and supervised hundreds of PhD candidates throughout his distinguished career.
In a remarkable moment, Dr. Tony had the rare privilege of personally administering acupuncture to Professor Shi himself — a profound gesture of mutual respect that speaks to the depth of their connection and the regard in which Dr. Tony is held within the international acupuncture community. Being personally certified by Professor Shi Xue Min — rather than through a secondary instructor — places Dr. Tony in an extraordinarily rare category of Western practitioners trained directly by the technique’s living originator. Professor Shi passed away in May 2025 at the age of 86, making this direct lineage of certification an irreplaceable and historic distinction. That authentic transmission of one of China’s most powerful clinical techniques is available to patients at Acupuncture Zen in Delray Beach today — bringing world-class neurological acupuncture directly to South Florida.
Florida Atlantic University Acupuncture Research Study on Mild Cognitive Impairment
Acupuncture Zen founder and lead clinician, Dr. Tony Willcox, initiated the first clinical acupuncture research study conducted at Florida Atlantic University, focused on Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). This groundbreaking pilot study, titled Effects of Acupuncture on Mild Cognitive Impairment, was published in September 2019 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinsonism.
The study explored how acupuncture therapy may support individuals experiencing early cognitive decline and memory-related concerns. Results from the research demonstrated measurable improvements in several important areas, including: Cognitive function and memory,
Mood and emotional well-being, Balance and Coordination, Mindfulness and Mental Clarity, and Physical Performance and Mobility.
Importantly, this research helped establish a scientific foundation for further investigation into acupuncture as a complementary therapy for Mild Cognitive Impairment and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
As interest continues to grow in non-pharmaceutical and integrative approaches to brain health, this study represents an important step toward validating acupuncture as part of evidence-based neurological and cognitive care. Click here to view study.

Among the many elite athletes who have trusted Dr. Tony Willcox with their care, few relationships speak louder than that with UFC welterweight Vicente “The Silent Assassin” Luque. One of the most prolific finishers in UFC welterweight history, Luque has accumulated 13 stoppages and earned eight post-fight bonuses throughout a decorated UFC career that has seen him defeat former champions and top-ranked contenders on the world stage. Vicente first came to Acupuncture Zen as a member of the Blackzilians fight team during The Ultimate Fighter Season 21 — where Dr. Tony served as the official acupuncturist for the entire Blackzilians roster throughout the competition. That relationship has endured, and Vicente’s personal endorsement says it best — autographing his UFC fight photo to Dr. Tony with the words: “Your Acupuncture ROCKS!” When a fighter of Vicente Luque’s caliber trusts you with his body before and after the biggest fights of his career, that is not just a testimonial — it is a professional endorsement earned through results.
