Delray Acupuncture and Fibromyalgia

Treatment

It is becoming more and more common to hear stories in the news or to hear of a friend who has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.  But what exactly is fibromyalgia?  Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by chronic, widespread pain, painful sensitivity to pressure, and extreme, debilitating fatigue.

People with fibromyalgia may also experience insomnia, depression or anxiety, an inability to concentrate or to retrieve known information, chronic headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, numbness or tingling in the extremities, restless leg syndrome, or poor circulation.

The individual must experience widespread pain in all four body quadrants for at least three months. Doctors assess specific trigger points for tenderness by applying pressure. Fibromyalgia likely causes no physical damage, but its cause remains unknown. No laboratory tests aid in diagnosing fibromyalgia. About 2% of the US population endures fibromyalgia’s pain and fatigue. Modern Western medicine cannot fully explain fibromyalgia. Given the complex and widely varied symptoms of individuals with fibromyalgia, most Western doctors treat the symptoms using prescription medicine and a trial-and-error approach, hoping to find something that will be effective.  Many individuals with fibromyalgia are frustrated by this approach and instead turn to alternative treatments such as acupuncture.

TCM

TCM views fibromyalgia uniquely, tailoring treatment to each person’s specific symptoms. Acupuncturists assess myriad signs to determine precise, individualized treatments. Despite sharing a fibromyalgia diagnosis, each patient receives distinct, personalized care. TCM teaches qi flows through body meridians, and blockages cause pain. Acupuncture restores qi flow, reducing pain and improving overall health. Practitioners insert tiny needles at meridian points to balance qi. Many fear acupuncture hurts, but fibromyalgia patients report minimal sensation. Regular acupuncture eases fibromyalgia pain and alleviates chronic fatigue. Acupuncture’s natural stress relief helps combat fibromyalgia-related depression and anxiety.

The scientific research also shows that acupuncture is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia.  A study conducted in 2006 by the Mayo Clinic found that acupuncture was effective in reducing the symptoms of fibromyalgia, especially depression, anxiety, and fatigue.  In the study, the acupuncture treatments were well tolerated by the fibromyalgia patients and had far fewer side effects than treatments using prescription medicine.
