Acupuncture and Fibromyalgia Symptoms
By: Sam Gaines, Staff Writer
First, the June 2007 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings reported the benefits of acupuncture for fibromyalgia patients. Specifically, it reduced fatigue and anxiety. Next, the study validated nontraditional methods, supporting patients’ beliefs. Then, acupuncture improved multiple symptoms in the trial. Finally, patients tolerated acupuncture well, experiencing minimal side effects.

First, Mayo Clinic doctors conducted a double-blind study, administering acupuncture to 25 fibromyalgia patients and sham treatments to 25 others. Next, patients received six treatments over two to three weeks. Then, the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire showed less fatigue and anxiety in the acupuncture group one month post-treatment. Consequently, Dr. David Martin, lead author, confirmed acupuncture’s benefits beyond placebo. Additionally, fibromyalgia causes chronic pain, fatigue, stiffness, and sleep issues with no known cure. Furthermore, Martin’s study proves acupuncture’s efficacy and the feasibility of rigorous trials. Subsequently, future research will identify conditions best treated by acupuncture. Meanwhile, Martin’s team, including Ines Berger, Christopher Sletten, and Brent Williams, used two acupuncturists for control. Finally, they urged more studies to optimize acupuncture for fibromyalgia.
