Acupuncture for Nausea and Vomiting
Research 1
First, the review showed P-6 acupoint stimulation outperformed placebo in reducing nausea and vomiting. Additionally, it decreased the need for antiemetic drugs. Consequently, researchers concluded P-6 stimulation lowers postoperative nausea and vomiting risks. Moreover, it causes minimal side effects.

Research 2
OBJECTIVE:
To summarize Cochrane systematic reviews assessing P6 stimulation for nausea and vomiting.
RESULTS:
First, reviews covered postoperative, chemotherapy-induced, and pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting. Specifically, 26 trials with over 3,000 patients showed P6 stimulation outperformed sham for postoperative nausea and vomiting in adults and children. Moreover, pooled data indicated P6 stimulation surpassed antiemetic drugs for nausea and matched them for vomiting. Additionally, P6 stimulation proved equally effective across invasive and noninvasive methods. Next, 11 trials with over 1,200 patients examined chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Electroacupuncture reduced first-day vomiting, but manual acupuncture did not. Meanwhile, acupressure alleviated first-day nausea but not vomiting. However, wristwatch-like devices showed no effect. Finally, six trials with about 1,150 patients studied pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting, yielding mixed results. Some trials favored P6 stimulation, while others showed no clear benefit or preferred method.
CONCLUSION:
First, P6 stimulation helps reduce nausea and vomiting across various conditions. However, its added benefit over modern antiemetics remains uncertain. Specifically, future chemotherapy research should target patients with refractory symptoms. Next, studies should explore combining acupuncture points with P6 or tailoring treatments to Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnoses. Additionally, identifying predictors of response across conditions could optimize acupuncture therapy for individual patients.
