Acupuncture may help some men overcome infertility problems by improving the quality of their sperm, according to a new study.

Sometimes nature needs a helping hand

First, researchers discovered that five weeks of acupuncture reduced sperm structural abnormalities in men with infertility issues. Additionally, acupuncture has been shown to increase normal sperm count. Consequently, they suggest acupuncture complements traditional infertility treatments. Ultimately, it helps men achieve their full reproductive potential.

Acupuncture May Ease Male Infertility

An estimated 10% of men are infertile, First, researchers note male partners contribute to 50% of infertility cases, often with unknown causes. Previous studies suggest acupuncture boosts sperm production and motility. Specifically, this study examines acupuncture’s effects on sperm structural health in men with unexplained infertility. Published in Fertility and Sterility’s July issue, the study involved 28 men receiving acupuncture twice weekly for five weeks. Meanwhile, 12 men received no treatment as a comparison group.

Fertility

First, researchers examined sperm samples before and after the study, noting significant quality improvements in the acupuncture group. Specifically, acupuncture reduced structural defects in sperm and increased normal sperm count in ejaculate. However, acupuncture did not affect immature sperm or sperm death rates. Consequently, researchers conclude acupuncture is a simple, non-invasive method to enhance sperm quality.
