Dermatitis

Overview of Dermatitis

Dermatitis is a skin condition that is characterized by irritation of the skin. There are three kinds of dermatitis: eczema, contact dermatitis, and dandruff. No dermatitis condition is contagious, but symptoms of these conditions can make people who are living with them feel self-conscious and intolerable. While there are various treatments available for dermatitis conditions, many people seek the help they need through acupuncture to speed up healing and manage symptoms without the unwanted side effects of prescription medications.

What Causes Dermatitis?

There is no one cause for dermatitis; different people may develop these skin conditions for different reasons. Some causes of dermatitis include allergic reactions to the skin, for example, using shampoos or soaps made with ingredients a person may be allergic to. It can also be caused by things that skin gets exposed to that lead to skin irritation including poison ivy, chemicals like the ones found in skincare products, or certain types of jewelry. Finally, other dermatitis causes include medical health conditions (autoimmune disease, infections, etc.)and genetic predispositions like dermatitis running in your family or dry skin.

Risk Factors for Developing Dermatitis

  • young age (people of all ages can have dermatitis but it’s typically diagnosed in early childhood)
  • careers that involve the use of chemicals that can be irritating to the skin
  • having specific medical conditions that can increase a person’s risk of skin irritation like allergies, autoimmune disorders, HIV, and heart disease
  • being female
  • being African American
  • living in a warm location

Treatment for Dermatitis

There are a number of different types of dermatitis treatments and every treatment may work differently from person to person. Treatment may also depend on the type of dermatitis a person is diagnosed with. Some available prescription treatments include prescription ointments, gels, creams, and prescription pills or injectables. Unfortunately, while there are many options for treatment, some people may have tried every prescription dermatitis treatment imaginable without the results they want or need to live out a life of mental and/or physical well-being.

Acupuncture for Dermatitis

Whether it’s the unwanted side effects of prescription medications, the ineffectiveness of current treatments, or simply wanting the healing process to accelerate, there are a number of reasons to consider acupuncture for dermatitis. It’s believed that acupuncture helps speed up dermatitis’s healing process in a few different ways. Firstly, acupuncture can help to improve blood circulation. This allows for a reduction in inflammation which can reduce uncomfortable symptoms of itching, redness, and rashes on the skin. Secondly, acupuncture can help boost the immune system, which is the body’s overall, natural healing process. This can help to speed up the healing of the symptoms of dermatitis that have already developed, leading to a reduced healing time.
