This kind of neuropathy is usually the result of injured nerves. These nerves are outside of the brain or spinal cords, hence the name “peripheral.” People with this condition experience numbness, tingling, burning, and weakness in the hands and feet. These sensations can sometimes spread upwards towards the legs and the arms. In severe cases, peripheral neuropathy can cause difficulty in walking, loss of coordination, or reduce musculature.
There are various reasons behind the injury of the nerves. One of the most common ones is diabetes which has not been monitored and managed properly, and this makes up to 60% percent of the cases. Other causes include autoimmune diseases, alcoholism, kidney disease, chemotherapy, hereditary disorders, and physical trauma.
A test called nerve conduction or NCS can be performed. Electrodes in the form of small metal wires send light electric shocks to stimulate the nerves. Then, the speed and strength of the nerve signal are measured. However, in order to properly diagnose the cause, there may be other several tests involved, including blood tests, imaging, and even nerve and skin biopsy.
In the eyes of an acupuncturist, pain and dysfunction are caused when the qi or the energy of the body is blocked. When this energy is blocked the tissues are not able to receive the proper nourishment from the fluids of the body, like the blood. Acupuncture treatment can help to regulate this natural movement of the body, improve nerve conduction and reduce pain. Along with herbal medicine, this treatment can be powerful in restoring the nerves to a healthier state, whether it is due to an underlying disease or physical trauma.
