What is Chinese Medicine? Millions of people get acupuncture treatments every day, but very few in the U.S. and Europe understand the underlying concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM operates on a very different concept as compared to the anatomical system followed by conventional medicine. TCM is all about maintaining balance and harmony, explained through the complementary Yin-Yang theory and the life-force, or energy called “qi,” which circulates in the human body through pathways known as meridians. Treating a sick or injured person requires the TCM practitioner to restore this balance using methods such as acupuncture, where the needles are inserted at specific points on meridians and manipulated.

The main types of treatments available under Traditional Chinese Medicine include:
The diagnosis in TCM is accomplished with the help of four methods. One is an examination of the tongue, from which an experienced practitioner can find out a lot about the condition of the inner organs. The second method is checking the pulse and palpation. Apart from these two, many TCM experts also depend on smell (olfaction) and the sounds emanating from the body (auscultation). The fourth part of the proper diagnosis is listening to the patient in order to understand the ailment and symptoms.
The actual treatment does not have to be restricted to just one of the aforementioned types and often requires a combination. For example, acupuncture is often combined with moxibustion. TCM can also be combined with conventional medical treatments since it is holistic and has no side effects.
