Acupuncture can help the symptoms of menopause

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her body goes through changes that indicate the end of fertility.  It is a normal event in the life of a woman and typically occurs between the ages of 45-55.  This “change of life” is different for every woman.  Some women go through menopause without any difficulty at all.  However, many women are plagued with symptoms caused by the hormonal fluctuations and other body changes that occur peri-menopause. Around 70% of women suffer from one of the symptoms associated with the menopausal transition.

What are the typical symptoms of menopause?  Every woman has heard of hot flashes and night sweats.  Other symptoms associated with the menopausal transition are sleep disturbances, weight gain, memory/thinking difficulties, and fatigue.  For these disruptive or disturbing symptoms of menopause, most doctors recommend medications such as hormone replacement therapy or prescription medications.  If you prefer a natural health solution without the side effects associated with prescription medication, acupuncture treatments may be the answer for you to help restore balance to your body and help to moderate all of these symptoms, resulting in a better quality of life.

Research about the effects of acupuncture in treating menopausal symptoms began in the mid-1990’s and several studies have been completed which show that regular acupuncture treatments, indeed, can moderate the symptoms associated with peri-menopause.  One study, completed in Ankara, Turkey, showed that acupuncture helped reduce the occurrence of hot flashes and sleep disturbances, as well as improving mood swings, in a group of women receiving 10 weeks of acupuncture versus a control group of women receiving faux acupuncture.  Researchers at Stanford University of Medicine, as well as the University of Pittsburgh, have shown similar results in their research.  Researchers at the Mayo Clinic believe that acupuncture helps boost endorphin levels, which provides energy, improves mood, and helps the body regulate temperature levels more efficiently.

Acupuncture can help the symptoms of menopause. A fundamental principle of acupuncture is restoring balance to the body in order to help the body work properly.  While menopause is certainly a natural process, it is also a process that is inherently out of balance until the transition ending fertility is completed.  Regular acupuncture treatments can help keep that process moving in a more smoothly, balanced manner.  Dr. Tony Willcox of Acupuncture Zen in Delray Beach, Florida, will work with you to develop a personalized, individual treatment plan to address the health and balance needs of your body.
